Protocols

This page documents a number of different types of protocols that are used in the entertainment industry to synchronize and control different systems. Some of them are implemented by software that we produce at Arcane Wizards.

Timecode Protocols

Timecode protocols are used to send precise timing information of media playback between different systems, ensuring that all devices stay in sync. A common use-case is synchronizing lighting systems with music playback, using information that is broadcast by DJ-Decks...

Here are the most common timecode protocols that are in use:

Clock / BPM-Syncing Protocols

If you only need to synchronize tempo between systems, for example to ensure that a number of different sequencers and musical instruments stay in-sync, then there are protocols that are designed specifically for this purpose.

Some systems also support synchronizing clocks through other methods, such as configuring specific OSC or MIDI messages to be sent between systems at the appropriate time, but these techniques are not as precise or reliable as using a dedicated clock / BPM-syncing protocol.

In addition to these protocols, most visual / lighting software that has BPM effects will have the ability for operators to manually click a "tap" button to set the tempo. Doing this will allow users to keep visuals in-sync, however over time this can lead to drift between the music and the visuals, and will require manually re-syncing the systems every so often. As such, using a dedicated clock / BPM-syncing protocol is generally preferred.

Control Protocols

Control protocols are used to send commands and control signals between different devices and systems. For example you may want to use a lighting console to control a media server, or a MIDI controller to control a VJ system. All of these protocols typically require a deeper understanding of the systems involved, and a certain amount of configuration so that systems send the appropriate commands to each other, and are able to respond to them.
