OS2L (Open Sound to Light)
OS2L is a protocol designed by the team behind VirtualDJ, and is intended to make lighting control easier for users who are handling both the music and the lighting at the same time via their application.
At a high-level, there are 2 main types of data that the application sends:
- Button & Control presses (that receiving software can respond to)
- Beat Information (that receiving software can use to synchronize with the beat)
In comparison to other protocols such as Ableton-Link or MIDI-Clock, the industry adoption of OS2L is relatively low, and it is primarily used by VirtualDJ users.
There are some notable examples of where it has been adopted though:
However, it's worth noting that even VirtualDJ themselves have an official plugin to enable usage with Ableton-Link, which would allow you to connect to many more different systems.
